You’ve heard the old saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Well, rules are meant to be broken in home decor. We will absolutely judge the books! Especially the old ones. So, here are a few decor tips to inspire you as you find ways to use vintage and antique books in your decor.
Why would anyone decorate with old and tattered books? Well, if you’re like me and love old things, you’ll relate. And if you’re not like me, my mission is to convert you. There’s something about old fabric covered books that draws me in. That wonderful bibliosmia that makes you somehow nostalgic for a place you’ve never been. Instantly, you feel that you must give this book its proper place.
The easiest way to display your lovely antiquarian books, is to stack them. Books make exceptional risers. If you have a pair of statues, place one on a stack of books two or three high. This will give visual dimension and flow. It’s much more appealing to the eye.
If you like neutral decor, the page edges fit right in to your style. Stack the books and flip them around so you’re seeing the page edges. Some old books have staggered page edges that add texture to your space. This tip works well when you don’t have a good color combination or just want a bit of color peeping through.
In the picture below, I repurposed a brass napkin holder and book. Okay, this is low level repurposing. But I think it qualifies. Adding the book, served to hold the picture in place and made a nice backdrop for the photo. I hope you are inspired to give new life to old books. Maybe even crack one open and be transported back in time. Happy Hunting & Blessings!
