19th Century Victorian Delft Flow Blue Butter Dish with Drain Insert
19th Century Victorian Delft Flow Blue Butter Dish with Drain Insert
The Delft 3 piece butter dish is decorated in a flow blue floral pattern with gilded accents. Believed to be marked Brownfield's Guild which operated from 1891-1900. In overall very good condition with some of the flow blue decorations remaining more vibrant and crisp than others. Minor loss to gilded details. Crazing to the glaze throughout.
Flow blue (occasionally 'flown blue') is a style of white earthenware, sometimes porcelain, that was manufactured in the Regency era, sometime in the 1820s, among the Staffordshire potters of England, but its origin story begins in China over a century earlier.. The name is derived from the blue glaze that blurred or "flowed" during the firing process.
This striking Flow Blue 3 piece butter dish still has the drain insert that is now rare. The drain inserts rarely have made it into the 21st century as they were easily lost or broken. The overall condition is in excellent antique condition. There is only one small chip that was noted on the inside of the lid, as shown in the photos.
