This vintage Old Whittemore carding comb dates back to the early 20th century. The two most common types were No. 8 Wool and No. 10 Cotton. Carding was the process of untangling wool or cotton fibers in order to prepare them for weaving. Amos Whittemore was granted a patent for a machine that made cards in 1797 and L.S. Watson & Co. was the largest manufacturer of cards in the 1800s. After L.S. Watson died in 1898, his son took over the business and changed the name to L.S. Watson Manufacturing Co. This is a single comb in good condition for its age.
